11th Annual Faculty Learning Community Developers’ and Facilitators’ Summer Institute
June 23-26, 2010
Kellogg West Ranch at California Polytechnic State University
Pomona, (Southern) California
Institute Information
Community is often missing in higher education, where connections across disciplines and institutional units are overlooked. Faculty and professional learning communities (FLCs) help establish these connections and achieve most of the outcomes of student learning communities: increased interest in learning, retention, active learning, rate of intellectual development, and civic contributions to the common good. The safety and support engendered in a community enable risk taking and the achievement of both individual and team objectives. Evidence shows that FLCs provide effective "deep learning" that encourages and supports faculty to investigate, attempt, assess, and adopt new methods of teaching.
FLC developers and facilitators have been identified as the most important keys to FLC success. Developers/Facilitators can learn successful strategies and methods for designing, implementing, and facilitating FLCs and FLC programs at the 11th annual FLC Summer Institute.
Location
The 11th annual Institute will be held in Sunny Southern California, 30 miles east of Los Angeles in Claremont, California. Conveniently located in the San Gabriel Valley, the FLC Institute is reachable in less than an hour from Los Angeles, San Diego and the Inland Empire.

Lodging
Rooms for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights are available on campus connected to the Conference Center. On-campus room reservations should be made directly with the Kellogg West Conference Center by calling 800.593.7876. Be sure to tell them that you are attending the Lilly Conference. Rooms also are available at the nearby Shilo Inn (909.598.7666) or Countryside Suites (909.860.6290). You will need a car if you stay off-campus.
Travel
The Conference Center is reachable by car in less than an hour from Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Orange County. The Ontario (California) airport is a 20 minute drive and is served by most major airlines and car rental companies. Free shuttle service is provided by the Kellogg West Conference Center. Call 909.869.2222 for reservations. Renting a car is recommended for groups of two or more.
Teams
We have learned from prior participants that coming as a team has made a big difference in how easily they were able to develop FLCs on their campuses. We therefore give preference for the Institute to teams of three or more from a campus, with a maximum of eight participants per institution. Individuals who do not come as part of a campus/institution team will be assigned to a three-person team with colleagues from a similar type institution, based on their interests.
Registration Limits and Process
There is a strict limit of 54 total participants in order to provide adequate time and resources for each group. Registrations will be accepted and places held based on receipt of the registration fee; details on team members can be submitted up to one month prior to the Institute.
